Suspended LHS teacher agrees to waive salary
A Lawrence High School teacher who was suspended with pay after being accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student has waived the remainder of her pay for the year, school leaders said Friday.
The 24-year-old teacher wrote a letter to the school board stating that she was accepting that her suspension be without pay, said Mary Rodriguez, executive director of human resources.
“She understands that her contract has been nonrenewed by the board for the 2007-08 school year,” Rodriguez said. “Because this is a personnel matter, we are not at liberty to provide additional details.”
The woman, who was in her first year of teaching at LHS, was arrested March 16 for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old between August and mid-March.
She has pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of criminal sodomy. The teacher is free on $15,000 bond and faces a preliminary hearing June 7 in Douglas County District Court.
The Journal-World does not print the names of people accused of sexual crimes unless there is a conviction.
