Members of Boy Scout Troop 65, Baldwin City, participated in campouts, a Court of Honor and several other activities during the first quarter of 2007.

The Court of Honor was conducted Feb. 25 at the Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center. Scouts earning rank advancements and other awards include Callan Anderson, one-year service star; Keenan Coffey, Star rank; Zach Garrett, Nick Hagen, Mac Halpin and Royce Harrison, Second Class rank; Sam Richards, Personal Fitness merit badge and Life rank; Greg Schiffelbein, one-year service star; Cameron Scruggs, five-year service star; Colby Soden, two-year service star; Jason Vonbargen, Scout rank; and Evan Wilson, Citizenship in the Community merit badge.

Leaders who received awards include Joe Bollig, Trenda Garrett, Donna Gratts, Jay Hundley, Betty Lawrenz, Robert Lawrenz and David Simmons.

Kirsten Shuck was one of 25 Douglas County scouts who were honored at the 21st annual Eagle Scout recognition ceremony, hosted by the Pelathe District, on March 8 at the Lawrence Country Club.

Shuck and Wilson were among seven Douglas County Scouts who went to the Philmont Scout Reservation, near Cimarron, N.M., on Jan. 11-16. The Scouts hiked, did ski touring, built snow shelters and learned about winter ecology.

The troop participated in four campouts during the first quarter: Trappers’ Rendezvous, Jan. 11-14 at Harvey County Park near Halstead; the annual Scout Day, Jan. 20 at Fort Riley; the Pelathe District’s mountain man-themed winter extravaganza, “Glacial Glutes,” Feb. 16-18 near Lone Star Lake; and a visit to the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation, Bonner Springs, March 16-18.

At Glacial Glutes, a group of Scouts won second place in the competition that featured tomahawk and knife throwing, archery, spear throwing, black powder rifle shooting and a blacksmithing demonstration.
