Craig Moore, Wellsville, and Joseph Muiller, Lawrence, have been accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy. The two high school seniors join six others from the 2nd Congressional District who recently were accepted into U.S. service academies, U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda announced this week.

Cadets will undergo a week of intensive orientation this summer before beginning their studies in the fall.

Dustin and Kellie Bauerle, Tinley Park, Ill., announce the birth of their daughter, Maisie Ann Bauerle, born April 17, 2007, in Chicago.

Her maternal grandparents are Wayland and Patsy Lankford, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Larry and Lori Bauerle, Nickerson. Great-grandparents are Marlin and Peggy Merklin, Liberal; Larry and Jean Bauerle, Vassar, Kan.; and Velma Lankford, Norman, Okla.

Shawn and Marcy Walters, McLouth, announce the birth of their daughter, Haydan Kae Walters, born April 11, 2007, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Her sister is Jenna Rae Walters, 3. Travis and Rachal Harper, Mulvane, announce the birth of their son, Mason Ralph Wayne Harper, born April 4, 2007, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He has a sister, Kelci. Grandparents are Jim and Liz Harper, Perry; Mary Bouray, Pittsburg; and the late Butch Bouray. His great-grandparents are Martha Harper, Perry; Joe Scraper, Baldwin City; and Audrey Foster, Pittsburg. His great-great-grandparent is Gladys Harper, Anaheim, Calif.

Hayley Barnes, a senior at Oskaloosa High School, received the Dale Dennis Excellence in Education award sponsored by the United School Administrators of Kansas. Recipients are honored for their outstanding qualities of citizenship, scholarship and service to their school and community.

George and Christina Frazier, Lawrence, are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary with a trip to Asheville, N.C.

They were married April 11, 1997, in Berkeley, Calif.

George received a doctorate in computer science from Kansas University and works as a software engineer for Cadence Design Systems Inc. Christina owns Connections For Hair LLC, a hair extensions salon in Lenexa.

They have a daughter, Chloe, 5.

The couple request no gifts.

Jacob Esau, Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the winter 2007 quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. Students must earn a 3.3 grade point average or higher to be named to the list. Esau is a junior in computer engineering and is the son of Mary Dillon.

Several local students received awards at the Kansas University Mathematics Competition on April 7. Benjamin Greenberg, Free State High School, took first place in the high school division, and Ingrid Hwang, Lawrence High, tied for second.

Jason Chang, Southwest Junior High, received an honorable mention in the junior high competition. Andrei Elliot, Quail Run School, tied for second among fifth- and sixth-graders. Winners in the third- and fourth-grade division included Hyunmin Ban, Hillcrest School, first; Ethan Kallenberger, Quail Run, third; and Matthew Eagle, Quail Run, honorable mention.

KU’s mathematics department sponsored the event, which drew more than 230 students from Lawrence and the Kansas City area.

¢Women’s Transitional Care Services and the Lawrence Humane Society are offering a dog wash fundraiser from noon to 4 p.m. April 28 at Petco, 3115 Iowa. Volunteers will bathe dogs in exchange for donations. Proceeds will benefit both organizations.

¢Beau Bemis, Ottawa, and Brenda Hughes, Wellsville, have been named as Capitol Federal Savings scholars at Emporia State University. This year’s program rewards 25 students in the School of Business who have graduated from a Kansas high school and have a minimum 3.25 grade point average. Selected students also are expected to develop and exhibit leadership skills while at Emporia State.

Starting at $1,000 for freshmen, the award increases each year, reaching $2,000 for MBA students. Bemis and Hughes are juniors.

¢Emily White, Lawrence, was a runner-up for the Community Service Most Charitable Award for her 381 volunteer hours in support of Kansas University’s Rock Chalk Revue. The student-run variety show was March 8-10 at the Lied Center. White, a senior, is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Other area residents who supported the show are Aubree Caston, Joshua Gering, Jaime Hornbaker and Brian Segebrecht, all of Lawrence; and Paul Lantis, Ottawa.

¢Kristi Bond and Allison S. Doores, both Kansas University students from Lawrence, have won National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships. Bond is a master’s degree student in linguistics, and Doores is a doctoral student in ecology and evolutionary biology, specializing in paleobotany.

Stephen Floor, a 2006 KU graduate from Lawrence now at the University of California-San Francisco, received an honorable mention. The fellowships provide a $30,000 stipend each year for three years of graduate study plus an allowance of $10,500 to the institution for research expenses. About 900 fellows for the 2007-08 academic year were selected from more than 8,339 applicants.

¢Several students from Central Junior High School were honored at the State Science Olympiad on April 8 in Wichita. Finalists included Roy Wedge and Lincoln Adams, first place in ecology; Claire Murphy-Beach and Morgan Rego, third place in oceanography; and Nora Byers and Grace Elizabeth Clark, third place in meteorology. Other participants were Michael Smith, Jacob Wilson, Grace Ellen Clark, Carmel Sivron, Natasha Carr, Paige Miller and Forrest Munro. Science teacher Cindy Wilbur was their coach.

¢Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care is offering scholarships for students interested in pursuing a career in the home health field, including nursing, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Students who are selected for a scholarship must agree to accept a position with the agency after graduation.

¢Kris Adair, Lawrence, was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta national honor society at Washburn University. Phi Alpha Theta promotes the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. Adair is a senior.

¢Southwest Junior High School claimed the 25th place trophy in the K-12 championship division at the National K-12 Chess Championships on April 13-15 in Kansas City, Mo. Individual trophies went to Thomas Clark, for second place among players rated under 1,400 in the championship division, and to Thomas Reams, for 11th place in the Bughouse competition. Other members of the SWJH K-12 championship team were Keely Stenseng, Peter Lesslie and Alan Shi. Also competing at the tournament were players from Free State High School, Central and South junior highs, as well as players from Cordley, Hillcrest, Quail Run and Wakarusa Valley schools.

¢Oskaloosa High School announces its Students of the Month for March. The school honored Ross Eubank and Jeni Newman, both seniors, and Clay Metzger and Sarah Newman, both juniors, for their positive contributions to the school and community.
