New federal census data indicated that Asians were enjoying larger incomes than whites in the United States and that 10 percent of the people in the country were speaking a language other than English in their homes. The indication also was that one in eight Americans could be considered poor. Officials here and elsewhere in the country termed the statistics a “snapshot of America” that should not be ignored.

A recent fiery two-fatality traffic accident at Kasold and Clinton Parkway had raised questions concerning safety at the intersection. Two women were killed after a truck rear-ended their car and pushed it across the intersection, rupturing the gas tank and engulfing the car in flames.

Faced with a streamlined billing system, a reduced budget in the coming fiscal year and federal grant cutbacks, Kansas University officials said that staff layoffs at KU Medical Center in Kansas City could not be avoided.
