From the Lawrence Daily World for April 20, 1907: “There is some talk about William Allen White, the Emporia editor, for governor of Kansas. Hooray! We are for a Gov. Bill White. There’ll be nothing the matter with Kansas when he takes the reins. : The Bible Institute at the university began this morning and some of the top religious figures are due along with local professors and ministers. : The conference of high school principals and superintendents from Kansas and western Missouri has begun here with the main issue being how much science should be taught. : Many from Lawrence left today for Kansas City to attend the Conreid Metropolitan Grand Opera Co. in Convention Hall. ‘Tosca’ and ‘La Boheme’ are to be the featured offerings. Trains today were loaded with local people going east. : An alleged plot on the part of a group of Pennsylvania anarchists to kill President Theodore Roosevelt is being investigated by the secret service. A member of the band of conspirators apparently was the source for the tip that prevented assassination.”
