Worthy goal
To the editor:
There has been much criticism in this paper of plans for an affiliation between Kansas University Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. In an increasingly globalized and competitive world, there is a huge difference between the rewards reaped by organizations that are excellent and those that are perceived as good. If KU Medical Center fails to achieve National Cancer Center status, that will have a significant negative impact on Kansas. There is no reason to think that winning this certification will be easy or without pain. KU Medical Center needs to be given the freedom to achieve this goal.
