Johnson Co. tax increase could help KU facilities

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius says she will sign into law a bill that could allow a tax increase in Johnson County to help Kansas University.

The measure would let Johnson County establish an Education Research Triangle Authority, which would be funded through a sales or property tax increase.

The tax money would go toward the KU Cancer Center, a classroom and office building for the KU Edwards Campus and a building at Kansas State University’s location in Olathe.

The tax increase would require voter approval in Johnson County before it could take effect.

Sebelius will have a bill-signing ceremony on the measure Thursday at KU’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park.
