Court considers appeal in 2004 fatal shooting

The Kansas Supreme Court will hear arguments next week in the appeal of Lafayette Cosby, a Lawrence man who was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of Robert Martin.

Cosby, then 25, shot Martin, 28, at close range April 4, 2004, at a late-night party at Jefferson Commons, an apartment complex at 2511 W. 31st St.

Prosecutors argued that Cosby shot Martin because he thought Martin was out to get him.

In his appeal, Cosby alleges there were numerous errors during his trial, including allowing his statement to police to be admitted.

His appeal will be heard Monday.
