KU period ensembles to perform in Topeka

Kansas University’s Instrumental and Vocal Collegium Musicum will perform at 7:30 p.m. today at Grace Cathedral in Topeka as part of the Great Spaces Music & Arts Series.

Paul Laird, KU professor of musicology, has conducted the eight-member instrumental ensemble since 1996. The group specializes in music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods, utilizing reproduction instruments from KU’s large collection and incorporating period playing styles and techniques.

Beth Wagstrom, a doctoral candidate in choral conducting at KU, conducts the vocal group of 17 singers, both graduate and undergraduate students. Vocal selections for this concert will be both a cappella and utilize instrumental accompaniment.

The concert, slated to last about an hour, will feature instrumental and vocal works from the 12th to the 20th centuries. A freewill offering will be accepted.
