Three separate motorcycle accidents in the area Sunday left one man dead and sent two others to the hospital.

The two injured drivers were both from Lawrence, while the deceased man, William John Moser, 57, was from Liberty, Mo.

In the fatality accident, which happened about 4:40 p.m. in Leavenworth County, Moser was driving south on Kansas Highway 5 when he lost control of the motorcycle and slid under a car traveling north, according to the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office. That car was driven by Thomas Martin Jr., 27, of Lansing.

Moser, who had the Harley-Davidson motorcycle only for a week, was traveling with a group of other motorcyclists who witnessed the crash and reported it to police. The police report did not indicate whether Moser was wearing a helmet.

In the more serious of the crashes involving Lawrence residents, Brian A. Thornton, 33, was driving his Honda motorcycle south on Wellman Road in Jefferson County around 4 p.m. when he left the road and entered the ditch, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Thornton, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then immediately taken by helicopter to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., a Highway Patrol dispatcher said. His condition was not available Sunday night.

The less serious accident involved Christopher M. Hultine, 22, who was injured about 1:40 p.m. when he lost control of his Honda motorcycle when exiting U.S. Highway 40 onto Kansas Highway 10. Hultine was treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was wearing a helmet.
