On pace for debut, Duno makes test run
Kansas City, Kan. ? Milka Duno finally got behind the wheel of an Indy car.
Rain wiped out Friday’s scheduled test at Kansas Speedway, where Duno plans to make her IndyCar Series debut this month.
But she was able to run about 140 laps on the 11â2-mile tri-oval Thursday, when conditions briefly warmed in the afternoon. She said Friday she still expected to run in the Kansas Lottery Indy 300, becoming the third woman to race in the IndyCar series after Sarah Fisher and Danica Patrick.
They are also expected to be in the Kansas Lottery Indy 300, marking the first time three women have competed in an IndyCar event.
“I wanted to have another test, but the weather conditions – I said, ‘Oh, no,’ Duno said. “But I am very happy, because my first test was very good.”
The 34-year-old Venezuelan is moving into open wheel competition after a successful career in sports cars. She won three times in the Grand American Racing Series and was part of the second-place team this year at the Daytona 24-hour endurance race.
“I didn’t realize how different this was going to be, but I just cut to the chase,” Duno said. “I’m still learning, of course – this was my first test – but I am a fast learner, also. This is an advantage, to adjust quickly to changes and take the opportunities you have.”
The biggest change, she said, is adjusting to the high speeds involved in open-wheel racing on ovals.
“You’re going over 200 all the time,” she said. “When you feel the car starting to slide a little bit, not to have nerves but to control the situation – that’s something very tough.”
Duno had hoped to take her first test drive three weeks ago, but has faced repeated weather delays.
Samax racing owner Peter Baron hopes to test next week at Kentucky Speedway and again at Kansas Speedway before taking her rookie test on April 25.
