Michael and Angela Jerome, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Micaiah Anthony Jerome, born on Feb. 24, 2007, at Olathe Medical Center. Micaiah weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces and was 20 1/4 inches long. Grandparents are Joe and Cathy Cribbs and Tom and Dee Jerome, all of Eudora, and John and Linda Suder, Lawrence.
His great-grandparents are Rex and Betty Slankard, Eudora, and Burt and Ruth Campbell, Weslaco, Texas. His great-great-grandparent is Hester Finley, Garnett.
¢Alex Coleman and Stacey Wallace-Coleman, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Beckett Alexander Coleman, born April 3, 2007, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He has a sister, Abigail Marian Wallace, 6. Maternal grandparents are Martin and Patricia Hoover, Lawrence. His paternal grandparent is Carmen Astacio, Fort Myers, Fla. Great-grandparents are Juan Astacio, Chicago, and Carmen Melendez, Orlando, Fla.
¢David and Julia Saville, Shawnee, announce the birth of their son, Michael Lawrence Saville, born March 19, 2007, in Lawrence. He has two brothers, Peter, 4, and Andrew, 2. His maternal grandparents are John and Jeanette Stine, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Carol Saville and Robert Saville. His great-grandparents are Helen Huslig and Mary Stine.
¢Michael and Melissa Pippin, Ottawa, announce the birth of their son, Anthony Edward Pippin, born Jan. 26. 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He has a sister, Jalyn, 4. Maternal grandparents are Kelly and Fran Murr, Gibbon, Neb. Paternal grandparents are Leo and Mary Ann Pippin, Ottawa. Great-grandparents are Joan Murr, Gibbon, Neb., Don and Buddy Samuels, Concordia, Mo., and Oran and Evelyn Johnston, French Village, Mo.
¢Arthur and Joyce Gassert, Lawrence, are celebrating their 43rd wedding anniversary.
They were married April 18, 1964, in Atchison. Arthur works at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and Joyce is retired. Their children are Robert Gassert, Eudora; Kim Potter, Eudora; and Kathryn Kinney, Nebraska. They have six grandchildren.
The couple request no gifts.
¢Lawrence students studying German participated in the annual Schülerkongress (students’ congress) on March 3 at Kansas University. Students competed in prose reading, poetry recitation, and spelling and culture quizzes. Erin Desetti and Lea Greenberg, of Southwest Junior High School, won first place for their poster entry depicting this year’s theme “Deutsch schmeckt gut” (German tastes good). SWJH students earning medals included Erin Desetti, Matthew Drahozal, Lea Greenberg, Brandon Hill, Brogan Mielke, Taylor Mitchell and Jessie Waller. Lawrence High School students earning medals were Walter Morris, Joseph Patrick Shopen, Kyle Consolver, Skyler Criswell, Paul Eltschinger, Kristen Gish, Alex Hyler, Anna Munzinger, Will Pendleton, Ben Wilson, Jordan Moshiri, Erin Tomkins, Laura Williams, Anthony Pokphanh, Lena Tsiovkh and Shane Billig.
¢Several area undergraduates in Kansas University’s School of Pharmacy were named to the fall 2006 honor roll. The students’ names were omitted from a list released earlier by KU. The students include John Price, Shelley Record, Chau Thien Trinh, Christina Van Auken and Sandra Vigil-Cruz, all of Lawrence; and Holly Sebree, Basehor.
¢Kasandra Williams, Perry, will perform in Washburn University’s Cabaret 2007 on Sunday. A soprano, Williams will sing the solo “Good Morning Baltimore,” from the musical “Hairspray.” She is a junior majoring in music education and is a member of the Washburn Singers.
¢Jenilee Morrison, Lawrence, was named to “Who’s Who Among Students at American Universities and Colleges.” Morrison is a senior Oxbridge science and bioethics major at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
Morrison was recognized at the college’s annual Celebration of Achievement. The students were selected based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
¢Mac Kenzie Flory, Baldwin City, will exhibit Angus cattle at the 2007 Western Regional Junior Angus Show next month in Reno, Nev.
Mac Kenzie, a junior member of the American Angus Association, is one of 68 young Angus breeders who have entered a total of 177 head to compete for championship honors. The show is sponsored by the American Angus Association and the Western States Angus Association.
¢Jamie McGovern has been named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved in the fall 2006 semester at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. Students named to the list are ranked academically in the top 10 percent of undergraduates at the university. McGovern, who is studying psychology, is a 2005 graduate of Free State High School. She is the daughter of Jim McGovern and Jody Anderson, both of Lawrence.
¢The East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. is accepting applications for its annual $500 college scholarship.
To be eligible, graduating high school seniors must live within the organization’s service area of Anderson, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Lyon, Miami and Osage counties. The student’s family’s income must be 125 percent, or less, of poverty level guidelines. The threshold for a family of four is $25,813.

¢Southwest Junior High School won the fourth-place trophy in the K-9 Championship Division of the National Junior High Chess Championships, conducted March 30-April 1 in Sacramento, Calif. Top scorers for SWJH were Thomas Reams and Thomas Clark, both earning 4 out of a possible 7 points. Other members of the team were Kellen Cross, Peter Lesslie, Alan Shi and Keely Stenseng.
Individually, Thomas Clark also won a first-place trophy among players rated between 1,200 and 1,399. He finished higher than anyone else in that range in the championship division. Thomas Reams also collected two individual trophies at the tournament, finishing 21st in the Blitz Championship and sixth in the Bughouse Championship, with partner John Nahlen, of Boise, Idaho. Blitz is a 5-minute chess game, and Bughouse is a two-person-team blitz match.
¢The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Association will offer the final recitals of the 2006-2007 year on Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.
Scheduled to perform in the 7 p.m. recital are Aimee Neilsen, Atticus vonHolten, Laura Neilsen, Yihan Li, Bryson Hewins, Dravid Joseph, Eric Palmquist, Jackie Hewins, Tammy Liu and Betty Zhang.
Scheduled to perform in the 7:40 p.m. recital are Spencer Yost-Wolff, Jessica Chen, Ben Katz, Alva Hallberg, Ellie Young, Jeffrey Chen, Marlee Yost-Wolff, Di Xie, Wyatt Bugh, Sydney Combs, Cal Young, Katie Stites, Nora Elbayoumy, Sarah Hirschey, Sarah Long and Adrienne Willems.
These students are from the studios of Virginia Penny, Richard Reber, Sylvia Frank, Jean Drumm and Carol Cook. The recitals are free and open to the public.
