Yes, Marion, if someone beats you up using any kind of racial or bigoted language, then they may be charged with a hate crime. That happened in Long Beach, CA.

Wilbur_Nether 11 years, 1 month ago

madmike seethed "How does that constitute a hate crime?"

First, if the person(s) committing the crime perceive the victim to belong to some identifiable social group due to race, national origin, gender, color, religion, age, disability, etc. and choose the victim because (s)he belongs to that social group, that can be classified as a hate crime.

Second, the story refers to this as a possible hate crime...that's one of the things they're investigating.

Typical LJW/Sunflower report. Not enough info to figure out what's going on.

Wilbur_Nether 11 years, 1 month ago

redfred, if you get "breaking news," you get whatever information is available. If you want detailed information, it's going to be stale. Not much alternative in between....

I witnessed the entire thing. He was a white male that got hit. The three pricks that were in on it where white college age kids. They called him a "faggot" while walking downtown. The guy that got jumped did not know who these people were. They followed him and jumped out of the car and punched him from behind. He did not see it coming. Meathead continued to kick and punch him after he was down. We called the cops while the two other meatheads in the car laughed and yelled other awful things. We honked the car and the cowardly meathead ran back to the others and peeled off down Connecticut. This is something that is not tolerated in this town. Take it back to the white trash place you came from...these kind of people are doing a dis-service to human kind.

um...offtotheright....he did....he ignored them and they followed him and jumped him because he was gay. I watched it happen. There was only 1 person that hit him. The others were in the car. This guy did not want to fight, did not encourage ANYONE to fight him and was minding his own business. In fact, he didn't even see the guy coming...he was completely blindsided. If anyone should use their heads, it's the bigots that were looking for trouble.

Marion, "Dumbass" isn't a protected class.

That means you need to be careful.

Godot 11 years, 1 month ago

How did they know he was gay? Were they personal acquaintances?

megmcc75 11 years, 1 month ago

Marion, You must be a bigot yourself?
I'm amazed how many people just want to believe this incident was something other than what it was. All should be appalled. It was the most unnecessary hateful thing i've witnessed in a long time.

megmcc75 11 years, 1 month ago

Godot, They did not know each other. The guy that got jumped had a slightly feminine taste in fashion. Obviously offending the meatheads...

I'm not sure what you mean? We talked with the police along with other witnesses if that is what you mean.

No...thank you.

Okay, so if a white, heterosexual, catholic guy attacks another white, heterosexual catholic guy (maybe because the guy who was attacked was fooling around with the attacker's wife or whatever).....and then the attacker admits to doing so because he hated the guy he attacked......can the attacker still be charged with a "hate crime"?

Or does a person only get charged with a "hate crime" if the victim is not exactly the same as the attacker?

As the victim in this incident, i would first like to thank meg and all others who helped me. it was a true surprise to me that people with compasssion live in this town. thank You Meg.

it has been my experience that most people in this town are not unlike that of the jack of all asses, marioN lynN.

Yes Marion, you are a Jackass, and not just a run-of-the-mill jackass, but the sort of jackass that would vote for gw bush or d cheney.

As for the hate-crime aspect, i also think that the entire concept of hate-crime is Effin asanine. Not because bigots shouldn't be prosecuted a bit more, but because all crimes are hate-crimes, 'liberal', or not. Not to say that all bigots shouldn't be creatively and slowly made into quadraplegic vegetables, but not to say otherwise, either.

As for the Mistake in Reporting of the location of the incident, it took place close to downtown, but not technically downtown. It happened less than 20 metres from the police station, on 12th, between rhode island and connecticut-- aren't there cameras within a square block radius of the police station? Maybe that is why the worldco reported it as having taken place downtown.

From previous experience w/ the town of lawrence police force, i expect this whole thing will be nothing more than talk. Although, it would be nice to see just the smallest amount of justice take place here, that is, without the heavy hand of corruption being the motivator.

And, My Fellow Queers, think twice before telling your friends this town is anything other than 'white-trash hell on wheels'. or that any of the 'publicly liberal/closet Abortion' politicians give 2 Damns about their constituency.

Thank You, And, As Always, HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH,

beatenQueer- Bravo for standing up and responding on this board. I am sure you will be subjected to all sorts of inflamed and insulting comments from here on out, but it is good to see you not just sitting back quietly.

born_to_run 11 years, 1 month ago

Wow! There are some really nasty, ignorant, and rude comments on here! I feel bad for the victim and I hope they catch the offenders.

Three dumb jocks beat you up, so that makes the whole town bad? C'mon man, don't be so bigoted. They may not have even been Lawrence residents. Either way, I hope they get caught and locked up.

Godot 11 years, 1 month ago

Meggers. That sounds so familiar. Where have I heard that before?

Porter 11 years, 1 month ago

"Did you get the license plate number? Did you get a descripton of the vehicle, color, make, model?"

yellowhouse 11 years, 1 month ago

This from the US Dept. of Justice:

Hate crime is the violence of intolerance and bigotry, intended to hurt and intimidate someone because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religious, sexual orientation, or disability. The purveyors of hate use explosives, arson, weapons, vandalism, physical violence, and verbal threats of violence to instill fear in their victims, leaving them vulnerable to more attacks and feeling alienated, helpless, suspicious and fearful. Others may become frustrated and angry if they believe the local government and other groups in the community will not protect them. When perpetrators of hate are not prosecuted as criminals and their acts not publicly condemned, their crimes can weaken even those communities with the healthiest race relations.

Of all crimes, hate crimes are most likely to create or exacerbate tensions, which can trigger larger community-wide racial conflict, civil disturbances, and even riots. Hate crimes put cities and towns at-risk of serious social and economic consequences. The immediate costs of racial conflicts and civil disturbances are police, fire, and medical personnel overtime, injury or death, business and residential property loss, and damage to vehicles and equipment. Long-term recovery may be hindered by a decline in property values, which results in lower tax revenues, scarcity of funds for rebuilding, and increased insurance rates.

Now, Marion - tell me just exactly is a "thought" crime?
