Indians prevail in ‘home’ opener

? Cleveland superfan John Adams pounded out his familiar drum beat in the Miller Park concourse, and curious Milwaukee baseball fans showed up to politely root, root, root for their adopted home team as the Cleveland Indians beat the Los Angeles Angels, 7-6, Tuesday night.

After sitting through a weekend’s worth of snow without playing a game that counted, the Indians finally got to play a home opener of sorts – under a retractable roof some 450 miles away from Jacobs Field.

The Indians’ three-game series against the Angels was moved to Milwaukee after a spring storm dumped more than a foot of snow on Cleveland and wiped out four scheduled games against the Seattle Mariners.

Indians players were concerned about being rusty after the layoff, but Cleveland starter C.C. Sabathia was anything but.

Despite not having pitched since opening day, Sabathia (2-0) gave up three runs in seven innings. The game ended when pinch-runner Erick Aybar was thrown out trying to steal second.

Athletics 2, White Sox 1

Oakland, Calif. – Mark Ellis singled off the wall in left with the bases loaded in the ninth after pinch-hitter Todd Walker tied the game on an RBI single.

Rangers 12, Devil Rays 9

Arlington, Texas – Frank Catalanotto hit a three-run homer in a seven-run third inning for Texas.

Yankees 10, Twins 1

Minneapolis – Alex Rodriguez homered in his fourth straight game to back a solid performance from Andy Pettitte.

Tigers 3, Orioles 1

Baltimore – Nate Robertson took a shutout into the eighth inning, and a throwing error by Brian Roberts provided Detroit with its first two runs. Robertson (2-0) allowed no runs and four hits, struck out five and walked one in 71â3 innings.

Red Sox 14, Mariners 3

Boston – Pelting Jeff Weaver with seven runs in the first two innings, Boston celebrated its home opener with a victory in Seattle’s first game since a blizzard snowed the Mariners out of four straight in Cleveland.
