Grants to help pay for fire sprinklers

City staff members are recommending that grants be provided to the owners of eight downtown buildings to help them install fire sprinkler systems.

Commissioners at their meeting tonight are scheduled to approve the following buildings for grants: Teller’s, 746 Mass.; Lawrence Masonic Temple, 1001 Mass.; Buffalo Bob’s Smokehouse, 719 Mass.; Goldmakers, 723 Mass.; The Bayleaf, 725 Mass.; The Casbah, 803 Mass.; Hobbs, 700 Mass.; and Silver Works and More, 715 Mass.

The grant program will provide a rebate of up to 75 percent of the costs of the fire sprinkler installation.

Commissioners previously approved the grant program, saying it was important to provide additional fire protection to the city’s historic downtown.

City staff members received applications for 35 buildings. Buildings were evaluated based on factors including fire protection systems, presence of residential units and historical significance.

Commissioners meet at 6:35 tonight at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.
