To the editor:

I read with interest the article titled, “Neufeld: City benefits from KU and should pay for repairs.” Mr. Neufeld seems to assume that only Lawrence and Douglas County benefit from Kansas University.

I believe that students from all over the state benefit from receiving an excellent education and then returning to their home counties to become productive citizens. They will then earn more money to add to their city and county tax base.

Has anyone considered tracking the students who attend Kansas Board of Regents universities and then taxing those home counties where students reside?

It seems logical that all citizens from the state of Kansas should share in the cost of maintaining a “public” university.

We seem to want to have open enrollment standards for Kansas students to enroll in state universities, but only desire that the city and county of the university pay for the privilege to maintain those institutions.

Has no one from Ingalls ever attended a regents university? If so, that seems very sad, indeed, that no one has taken advantage of such wonderful opportunities.
