Lawrence native Lindsay Smith tried her hand at love on ABC's "The Bachelor: Officer and a Gentleman," which aired Monday night.

The 22-year-old 2001 Lawrence High School graduate and junior in public relations at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas was among 25 young women vying for the heart of Andy Baldwin, a 30-year-old U.S. Navy lieutenant.

Alas, Smith didn't get a rose.

Smith is the daughter of Leroy Smith Sr. and Connie Conboy-Vann of Lawrence.

kujayhawk 8 years, 8 months ago

I was embarrassed for her, her family, Lawrence High and the city of Lawrence. Let's hope she never represents Lawrence again in anything.

Rhoen 8 years, 8 months ago

And she represented the town so well ... did us proud.

LovelyAngel315 8 years, 8 months ago

And she's supposed to be a public relations major???

lily 8 years, 8 months ago

I was appalled at her behavior. If she thought it was all so fake why even bother? She was an embarrassment to us all.

tweetybird2 8 years, 8 months ago

She needs to pick a different major. She acted like a two year old that didn't get her way.

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

Giiirrrllll! Don't you got no shame!? Ya momma needs to take you back behind the house an give ya a good talkin to.

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

Ain't no MAN worth makin a fool a yourself over. Even ifin ya get to be on the TV.

savinlives 8 years, 8 months ago

This women was awful! Words can not describe how bad it was to watch her be so nasty. And the comments she made about the other girls on the show and then to just go leave before it was over without a rose. I hope the girl from Overland Park goes far. She was a lot nicer. During the rose part at the end, you could just see the smoke rolling out of her nose because she had not rec'd a rose. She wasn't even smiling...........How she ever got picked for the show is beyond me!

savinlives 8 years, 8 months ago

blue73harley--you could probably go to the website and preview it----IT WAS BAD!

Wilbur_Nether 8 years, 8 months ago

Wow. We're taking this kind of personally, aren't we?

lily 8 years, 8 months ago

I watched it for the first time since two "locals" were on it. Ms. Smith made a spectacle of herself. Even if she wasn't from Lawrence I still would have been thoroughly disgusted at her behavior. They had to bleep her language several times.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 8 years, 8 months ago

"How she ever got picked for the show is beyond me!"

She was probably being honored for only being a hottie.

In my last job a woman came in to interview for a job. My boss asks her "so why should we hire you?" to which she replied "because I'm cute". We weren't running an excort service, so she didn't get a second interview. NEXT!

OUTWARD beauty still gets people way too far in our culture. And, although we say its wrong, few of us really seem to want to change the culture. Models and receptionists for car dealerships should be hot - the rest of us need to be expected to earn the jobs we hold.

My daughter is seriously cute, but if I ever catch her trying to "get by" on cute, I'm going to hank her chain back like a bad dog.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 8 years, 8 months ago

"I've never heard of the show."

Not clapping during a pause between movements is not a sign of high culture. But not knowing that there is a stupid TV show where people are played like a polished-up episode of "Blind Date" is a sign that you may just have a REAL life.

mom_of_three 8 years, 8 months ago

I haven't watched the bachelor since the first season, but I heard about the antics on the radio this morning. I wasn't home last night - (Eric Clapton concert), but it didn't sound good. If that was my daughter, I would be angry and embarrassed. But you have to wonder if the producers really played it up more than needed. For her sake, I hope so.

lunacydetector 8 years, 8 months ago

just tell me she wasn't as bad as that chubby blonde from wichita that ended up sleeping with that gay looking/acting bachelor while on a trip to new york city a few years ago. not only disgusting but embarrassing, but luckily the last season my wife watched, so i no longer have to endure the agony watching that show. :)

hey, don't forget to vote bush, chestnut, and dever today!

acg 8 years, 8 months ago

I'm disgusted that any woman would line up like so much cattle for this (or any) jerkoff to pick and choose over. I almost expect him to look at her teeth and comment on whether or not her coat is shiny enough. It makes a mockery of relationships, love and marriage (and they say gays do that!) and it doesn't even make for good tv. IMHO, and all. :)

lunacydetector 8 years, 8 months ago

wow couranna, spoken like a true brownshirt.

but there is common ground...i like clapton too!

Linda Endicott 8 years, 8 months ago

I have never watched the Bachelor, or Survivor, or the Biggest Race, or the Biggest Loser, or Fear Factor or any of those so-called "reality" shows. I think they're insipid.

I sincerely wish the fad for this kind of tripe would go away.

raiderssb 8 years, 8 months ago

Most of you really need to get over yourselves. There is no reality in this "REALITY". If you seriously think that this whole thing isn't contrived, and set up with a film editor to get the most out of the program, then you are fools. It is all a ratings game. Didn't it occur to that the extensive amount of "face time" Lindsay was given happened for a reason. Reality TV creates just what you people are giving it - controversy. The women were filled up on liquor all night long, and barely given anything to eat but finger foods. The last rose was given at 6:00 am in the morning. The six foot tall Bachelor was really five eight. The other women on the show behaved in an outrageous way which equalled, or was greater than Lindsay but you did not see it. Of course, since she was the ONLY black woman on the show, and much better looking than the bleached blondes, with fake body parts, they played it up. Mom_of_three - I think YOU get it, It was a production SUCCESS for ABC, and Warner Brothers. And to those that wonder how she got ON the show, it is because she is smart, funny, creative, and good looking. I know because I am her Mom. You haters are totally clueless, but we, her family, know the REAL Lindsay, and you don't!! You might want to expand your mind - and free yourselves.

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

My momma always used to tell my sis, "Beauty is as beauty does." Well now, she was as ugly as they come. But, my daughter is beautiful in every way. She'd never demean herself by bein on that kinda TV show. Wouldn'ta watched it neither. She's a peach.

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

I suspect that the whole durn thing, and alla them other "reality" shows is scripted. Just bad theatre.

Linda Endicott 8 years, 8 months ago

And you're okay with your daughter letting others exploit her in that way? You're okay with her making a national spectacle of herself for money?

tweetybird2 8 years, 8 months ago

I still think she could have handled the situation better but, don't go after her mom. She's defending her daughter. Most mothers would do the same.

Crispian Paul 8 years, 8 months ago

raiderssb-calm down. Don't take it as a personal affront that some people enjoy that which you do not. I don't like football and think it's stupid, but you don't see me lambasting sports fans here. I am a well-educated person. I know that these reality shows are very often re-shot, edited, etc to get the desired effect. However, I will be the first to admit I do like stupid reality shows (not all, just some). I have such a stressful job (social work) that I need a mindless outlet sometimes.

On that note, this girl was such a brat. She was hateful and derisive to the other women. She acted like a spoiled child. She began to yell and cuss and stomp around because some dude she had just met did not "pick her". Wow. And she was not even remotely attractive, especially in light of her attitude (paladin-like that--"beauty is as beauty does...")

Kathy Gates 8 years, 8 months ago

I can't believe that if one of the "bleached blondes" as you put it, had such a melt down and walked off in a huff after not getting a rose as your daughter did that ABC wouldn't have also put that on. Why is it that all of the contestants had liquor forced on them, only finger foods to eat, and were kept up all night, but only your daughter had the temper tantrum?

That's right...because she was the only black woman on the show. The color of her skin didn't seem to matter to any other posters.

Crispian Paul 8 years, 8 months ago

raiderssb---Did you provide these criticisms of realty TV and the Bachelor to your daughter before she went onto the show? Or is it only after the entire country was commenting on her demeanor that you decided that this was not a good thing? Interesting too that you are using some of the very same phrases your daughter used to describe these other women (i.e. "bleach blonds" and "fake" body parts--although I think Lindsay said "fake t*s" several times).

Julie Jacob 8 years, 8 months ago

Regardless of reshoots and edits, Lindsay CHOSE to act in that manner full well knowing that she was in front of the camera. Whatever her major and life course, her tantrum is now out there for the entire world to see. I seriously hope that she is able to take an objective peek into "the looking glass" and learn appropriate behavior.

sissezz 8 years, 8 months ago

hellooooo? It doesn't matter who gets kicked off or when , they always show the worst scenes of the person leaving........

badger 8 years, 8 months ago

I'm not sure why the rush to trash someone for even wanting to be on the show. I think that for a lot of women, it could be a really neat and interesting experience, even if they didn't get picked. You've got an entire nation hashing over your relationship decisions, which means it could be really interesting to buck the game on national TV.

Choose not to manipulate, not to trash others, not to be false and petty. Communicate honestly and openly, to get people talking about why that does or doesn't work in relationships.

Then, if honesty and sincerity and refusing to play games get you bumped, hit the lecture circuit or write a book about how people sabotage their relationships for glamour and how we hamstring honest communication in our interactions with each other.

I've never watched the show, but based on what I've heard it seems to reward duplicity, insincerity, self-promotion, and superficiality. What fun it would be for a woman to play that game to get on the show (because I'm sure the producers would never let on someone who didn't have the potential for catfights and emotional outbursts) and then see how far refusing to play the stupid relationship games our culture expects got her.

As to this young lady, it's too bad that she behaved inappropriately. It would have been a far better reflection on her family and hometown if she'd kept her head and her dignity, but apparently she didn't. She was, though, probably acting just as she was expected to act, perhaps even coached to act. I'd imagine there's a good bit more to her meltdown than just her being ill-mannered or poorly brought up, and I think that kicking her mom (if it really is her mom; how convenient!) is equally bad manners.

mom_of_three 8 years, 8 months ago

Thank you, Lindsay's mom. I have learned a long time ago you can't judge a person from a one-sided glimpse. Other reality show contestants have talked about the show makes them seem worse than they are. But I don't watch those shows either.

And the Eric Clapton concert was great. He played lots of his blues music, which made my hubby happy. I didn't recognize much of it, but i have always liked it. Robert Cray was the opening act, and he was really great, too. I was just in awe that I was watching Eric Clapton. "Layla" was awesome, but I wish he would have played "after midnight."

OldEnuf2BYurDad 8 years, 8 months ago

I think it's interesting how TV programming has de-emphasized sit-coms and dramas for the sake of reality TV. It seems as if reality TV has come full-circle: its so outlandish that its become completely unreal. Reality TV looks nothing like reality, so why not bring back the traditional programming, like the kind we had before the writer's strike? [Not saying that was "good" TV, but at least it was honest about it's fakeness.]

thisiknow 8 years, 8 months ago

There are no excuses for this behavior. She knew this would be filmed and she choose to behave this way. She was not the only woman to behave rudely but she sure put the spotlight on her back by using profanity and almost attacking the girl who received the first rose. This is reality tv and the reality is she behaved badly enough for the editors to put her actions up front instead of on the cutting room floor. Great tv !!!!! Bad behavior!!!. This too shall pass--or maybe she can be the next bachlorette!!!!!!!

porkchop 8 years, 8 months ago

Well, guess we know how the folks in Topeka feel.

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

Reality is relative and there really is none, only one's perceptions of experiences. The TV show is not real, but merely a projection of the fantasies of the viewers. It fulfills the same social and personal need that movies from Hollywood did during the Great Depression. A deflection from the desperate times we live in and a reflection of our yearning for better, happier lives. Oh well, its kinda fun.

Bladerunner 8 years, 8 months ago

That girl puts the B in Beyotch! If you missed it, you can watch it on I recommend fast forwarding to the tantrum at the end.

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

Peace, Poshloster, peace, man. Don't get yer bowels in an uproar over somthin as trivial as this. It just ain't worth it. Have another beer.

rivercity 8 years, 8 months ago

You could STARVE my kid for 5 days and offer her all the liquor in the world and she WOULD NOT act like a SKANK ....... get a grip lady. And to all of you 'I DON'T WATCH REALITY TV.......I DON'T HAVE CABLE' "refined" people........ get lost and let the people who DO watch it have a discussion without your useless input.

MeeMa8 8 years, 8 months ago

i don't watch reality t.v. it's very cheap for networks to produce so they love it. yes, we all know parts of it are staged, but i heard the replay on the radio this morning. She used the "f" word and the "b-h" word more than once. I don't care what the excuse, if my daughter acted like that on national t.v. she would know in very short order that her mother DID NOT approve!!!! it doesn't matter whether it was staged or not, it was totally wrong!

SouthernBelle 8 years, 8 months ago

raiderssb - sounds like you may have raised a brat. However, she is "your" brat and I understand why you would want to defend her. That being said, I did not watch the show and find it odd that the only way I knew that the woman everyone here is talking about is black is because of her mom. Seems to me that race is only an issue in your mind.

I wonder if she attended classes in Womens studies at KU. My first guess is yes.

You farmers in Lawrence are such hicks. Trailor park trash sums up the folk here..

HA Ha, you deserve what you got, a whiney B-H! Of course, her behavior is in keeping with the entitlement mentality of Lawrence. She had a "RIGHT" to be chosen. She was entitled to be chosen. blah blah blah.

Pathetic town, pathetic people.

Poshloster, Get loster No one asks you to post on the news website for this backwards, trailer trash town, nor is anyone forcing you to read this. Get poshloster. In my world, we have a word for people like you, but I can't say it here.

What was the statement about women's studies and what did that have to do with anything? Or was that just your way at making a jab at a department you clearly do not respect?

Also, where are the farmers in Lawrence? I live in East Lawrence and there are certainly no farms in Lawrence proper that I know of.

Posh-loser, If you think this twon is so pathetic and all the people on this forum are hateful, anti-Christian, pro-abortion (I looked through your other posts), why have you posted FIFTEEN TIMES since MARCH 29?!?! Clearly, you get your jollies from thinking you are better than others?

esl03 8 years, 8 months ago

I was embarrassed. Good thing I didnt go to school with her. You need some manners and AA meetings. Maybe they should have a FREE STATE GIRL on there!!!

mtherov4 8 years, 8 months ago

Having raised 4 children I realize that after a certain age you can't control what they say or do, but I can disagree and let them know my feelings. If I was this girls mother I not only would expect and apology from her for disgracing the family and the community, but I would probably change my name and address so I could not be connected to her in anyway. I don't care if this was staged or not, it was presented as reality TV and some people take shows like this as the gospel truth unlike sitcoms, so she should have presented herself the same way she would have if her parents were doing a home video, or maybe she was I don't know. Her behaviour was awful and her language was worse and she was an embarassment not only to Lawrence ,but to the State of Kansas. As a mother I understand her mothers wishes to stand by her daughter and defend her, but some things are beyond defending. I do have the relief of knowing that I am far from having the worst behaved child in Lawrence, Kansas, and if people knew who I was they would probably recognize my childs name. As for the race card, I saw the show and did not realize that she was black. I've seen many white girls in love with tanning booths much darker than her. She also wasn' pretty enough to be putting down how the other girls looked, out of the 25 girls with 1 being the best she was maybe 22. She did however beat out the buggy eyed girl.

rivercity 8 years, 8 months ago

The buggy eyed girl was INSANE yet WELL MANNERED. Way to go buggy eyed girl!

jcantspell 8 years, 8 months ago

It's not real!

And wouldn't be surprised if she got her on realty show Some times the worst one's do Just wait you will see her again. Soon ! And you will not be able to get enough of her!

mtherov4 8 years, 8 months ago

I didn't notice either , I couldn't get past her eyes. I'm guessing Graves disease ?!

i_have_only_valid_opinions 8 years, 8 months ago

I don't care how much spin you put on it, she was way more confrontational all night than anyone else. There were others more drunk (and one even fell down drunk - but she was a nice drunk). Lindsay's mom - be careful how negative you get on here because it was so obvious that your daughter was waaaaay out of line! You will only cause further damage if you try to deny all of it. That will make your family look even more ridiculous if you fight it all. Just take your lumps and move on.

She was wiggin' out!

kujayhawk 8 years, 8 months ago

Black or not, she is not cute at all.

i_have_only_valid_opinions 8 years, 8 months ago

So much for a public relations career. If that's her best shot at putting forward a good presence in public, who would hire her to do the same for them?

Next career? Anger management counselor? Nope, that's out too.

i_have_only_valid_opinions 8 years, 8 months ago

No, not cute. There are much cuter college girls here in town. And better mannered.

mtherov4 8 years, 8 months ago

I didn't notice anyone using a funnel forcing her to drink. She should know her limit, they all should know their limit, and obviously some did , very few acted drunk and none as obnoxious as Lindsey, not even the floor wiggler, or the flipper.

i_have_only_valid_opinions 8 years, 8 months ago

What was the flipper? I saw the one in the short, short dress doing that snake thing on the floor. But can't say I remember the flipper.

acg 8 years, 8 months ago

I just watched the last five minutes of that show online and I have to say she acted like a spoiled, rotten, trash mouthed brat. I was so appalled that she rolled her eyes during the whole ceremony, every time her name wasn't called and then to storm off like that cussing and bawling about how you want to go home? Bachelor dude, I'd say you dodged a bullet with this one. Be glad for that, at least.

mtherov4 8 years, 8 months ago

The flipper was a girl that did a perfect back handspring and back flip and landed in a perfect sitting postion on the couch, and I'm not even sure she was drunk. She didn't appear to be.

Crispian Paul 8 years, 8 months ago

The flipper was the girl in a long satin or silk charmeuse gown that did a backhandspring for the Bach.

The girl who fell off her stool was hilarious. At least she was a funny drunk.

Crispian Paul 8 years, 8 months ago

She said she was going to do a flip, but she actually just did a round off back hand spring. The bachelor apparently knew that too because she told him she was going to do a flip and then did that and in his "face to face" with the camera commented on her perfect back handspring.

i_have_only_valid_opinions 8 years, 8 months ago

Oh yeah, I remember. The only thing the Bachelor did wrong in that scene was to not already be sitting on that couch when she landed.

lawrence_native 8 years, 8 months ago

Trashed are correct. She was that way towards many people all through out her school career in lawrence. You could label her as a mean girl, always causing disruption between girls. She enjoyed making fun of people and got off on their misery. I guess like mother, like daughter is correct because her mother is just like her.....

OOOhhh wait..... wasn't her mother in the newspaper a few years ago for being arrested for embezzlementor theft of money from her job and fired??????? Thought the name sounded familair.

Maybe her daughter isn't like her.......not yet....but keep up the attitude....wont be long.........

concernedparent 8 years, 8 months ago

That girl should be embarrassed. That was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever seen. She should be on Jerry Springer, not the bachelor.

rivercity 8 years, 8 months ago

I'm feeling like we need to discuss the SINGER of the NATIONAL ANTHEM.........It's a toss up whether it will be the SINGER or CAKE BAKER who will soon have a rabbit stewing on the bachelor's stove.......(for those of you who are ABOVE watching reality shows, or CABLE....this is a reference to a MOVIE called FATAL ATTRACTION which you were probably TOO busy listening to OPERA or finding a CURE FOR CANCER to have seen).

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

I don't figur I'm no better'n nobody else. Not no worse neither. And my offspring don't neither. Leastwise, I figur I can act right in public, ifin I have to. And, so can my kids. I always made sure a that when they were acomin up. I got no reason to ever be ashamed of myself in public, leastwise when I'm sober, and maybe that's the deal, truth to tell, and of my kids, neither. Praise the Lord.

smartone 8 years, 8 months ago

Anyone else notice she is 22 and graduated in 2001..shouldn't she be like 24?Another ljworld Typo?

i_have_only_valid_opinions 8 years, 8 months ago

She isn't "Lawrence"! She is the average American girl! Shouldn't reflect on Lawrence any more than anywhere else, other than it may be the only mention 30 million Americans ever have of Lawrence when they heard it on The Bachelor last night. So it will reflect on Lawrence regardless.

oldgoof 8 years, 8 months ago

lawrence native's post at 4:13 hits the nail on the head. The apple falls not far from the tree, who also grew up in Lawrence. Many in town know the tree. Ask around.
Rough life, and some bad breaks, but no excuse for her adult behavior, which is attested to by others here.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 8 years, 8 months ago

I honestly appreciate your empassioned response regarding your daughter. It's good to know that what we "think" we saw may have been somewhat manipulated.

However, I feel the need to ask: why be on the show? Did your daughter have any idea what those shows are like? I guess I don't understand why it MATTERS to ANYONE that such programming even exists! NO part of that entire genre of programming has any redeeming value. When it's bad, it's horrible; and when its "good", its totally voureristic. Shows like that just kill brain cells. Its like the WWF: it is social violence for entertainment's sake.

An anonymous yet established poster on claimed that this chick almost got into a fistfight at a party a few years ago.

After viewing that embarrassing video (whether it's scripted or not) I kinda believe it!

I cringed every time I saw her face and "Lawrence, KS" on the screen.

That bug-eyed girl (I call her Jen Wilbanks' sister) was hypnotizingly alluring. I can't get her out of my mind now!

paladin 8 years, 8 months ago

missmagoo 8 years, 8 months ago

Thanks a lot, Lindsay, for representing Lawrence so well. YOU DON'T EVEN GO TO KU... you dropped out, remember? So now you extended your shame to KU as well. You acted like a jack--- on national television. Your parents must be so proud!

missmagoo 8 years, 8 months ago

And also, 6 news reported that she was 22 and graduated from LHS in 2001. Do the math. ??????

willie_wildcat 8 years, 8 months ago

I just saw the clip and all I can say is DAMN! She acted like a spoiled rotten brat that did not get what she wanted.
Oh and paladin love the quote "beauty is as beauty does".

mom_of_three 8 years, 8 months ago

Some of you are pitiful. She could be turning 23 this year and graduated at 17. It's possible and happens all the time.
There are plenty of kids who have embarrassed their parents(see spring break videos), and after a certain age, there is nothing a parent can do about their kids behavior.

shirinisb 8 years, 8 months ago

The girl obviously didn't have the attitude it takes to complete a degree in college. She couldn't even wait until the show was over before she stormed off freaking out and making crude comments.

My 5 year old has never acted that way. I don't care if they edited any part of it, her actions were disgusting.

To her mother, well... I'll probably have my post removed,

mtherov4 8 years, 8 months ago

I have been thinking about this,(sad I know that I have nothing better to do with my life), and I think maybe Lindsay should hook up with Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears, they are always looking for new BFF'S. Maybe they could all hook up and make a new home video for the internet. I wonder if she had underwear on under her dress when she had it hiked up doing whatever it was she was doing ?!

concernedparent 8 years, 8 months ago

uhm, I also graduated in 2001 and I'll be 25 this year. I'm sure there's no way she's 22 and only did every class only 1 time.....

Wilbur_Nether 8 years, 8 months ago

If we all find this show to be so uninteresting, and are disavowing this contestant, why is this thread continuing?

mtherov4 8 years, 8 months ago

I'd like to hear what she has to say for herself instead of making mommy say it for her. I'd also like to see if she can use civilized language to say it. After that I'd be done.
