Several coaches starting to sweat

? With the NBA regular season in its final month, some head coaches are growing a little uncomfortable wondering whether they’re about to receive a phone call to meet with their team owner or general manager.

Here’s a look at who could be unemployed in the coming weeks:

¢ Bob Hill. The SuperSonics didn’t look as if they were going anywhere anyway this season, but Hill contends that the losses of Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis and Luke Ridnour for significant stretches hurt their effort. But with a contract that expires in June and a new owner in Oklahoma City businessman Clay Bennett, Hill doesn’t appear likely to return.

¢ Eric Musselman. Any team with Mike Bibby, Brad Miller and (a calm) Ron Artest in the starting lineup should be challenging for a playoff berth. But it’s not happening, and the fingers are pointed squarely at Musselman, the handpicked choice of team owners Joe and Gavin Maloof last off-season.

¢ Doc Rivers. Rivers will enter the last season of his contract in 2007-08 and already is on record as saying he’d rather not coach without receiving an extension. It’s been a nightmarish season for the Celtics, who had an 18-game losing streak earlier in the season and saw Paul Pierce miss 24 games.

¢ Rick Carlisle. He was a hot property once upon a time, but not now. He had off-the-court issues with Stephen Jackson (since traded) and Jamaal Tinsley. The Pacers have been in a free fall recently, having lost 17 of their last 19 games. Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird are generally patient people, but their patience may have run out.

¢ Sam Mitchell. The fiery Toronto chief already has led the rebuilt Raptors to 12 more victories than last season’s total of 27. But general manager Bryan Colangelo, the former Phoenix GM, wants to bring his old team’s style to Toronto and is said to have his eye on Suns assistant Marc Iavaroni.

¢ Mike Woodson. The former Sixers assistant hasn’t been all that successful molding the Hawks’ youth into a cohesive unit. Losing all-star guard Joe Johnson for the season didn’t help. But the Hawks are on pace to lose 50 or more for the fourth straight season, and GM Billy Knight, who hasn’t exactly showered Woodson with talent, may go in another direction.
