Jayhawks can’t finish ninth-inning repeat

? This time, the ninth-inning runs weren’t enough to help the Kansas University baseball team rally for victory.

The Jayhawks scored twice in the final frame on a two-run double by Preston Land but couldn’t get the extra run they needed, falling 8-7 to Missouri on Saturday at Taylor Stadium.

KU (16-16 overall, 3-5 Big 12 Conference) put the tying run on second base with two outs in the ninth, but the Tigers’ Scooter Hicks got pinch hitter Eric Snowden to fly out to center field to end it.

Sophomore catcher Buck Afenir became the first KU player to homer twice in the same game this season, hitting a two-run shot in the second inning and a solo shot in the fourth. Designated hitter Joe Servais also homered in the fourth as part of the Jayhawks’ 12-hit attack.

However, KU left 11 runners on base, and its pitching staff had trouble containing Missouri leadoff hitter Evan Frey.

Frey finished 3-for-6 with five RBIs, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning off KU starter Zach Ashwood (3-3) that gave the Tigers (21-8, 3-2) a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series at 1 p.m. today.
