Retail ‘drama’ may not sell

What’s it like to design catalogs for the world’s biggest department store? On “Unwrapping Macy’s” (9 p.m. today, WE), we watch creative directors choose underwear models and then travel to a beach and take pictures of them in the sand. It’s not as captivating as it sounds. A major drama ensues when it appears that some of the pictures are blurry. Oh, the horror!

Future weekly installments include fashion shows, flower shows and battles with the media. The seven-episode series culminates with the Thanksgiving Day parade and the creation of Santa Land and Christmas Windows. It will take a miracle on 34th Street to make this interesting.

¢ Correspondent Frank Sesno hosts “Rumsfeld: Man of War” on “CNN Presents” (7 p.m. today, CNN). The documentary follows Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld during a day’s work at the Pentagon. Sesno also sits down with Rumsfeld and colleagues for conversations about his leadership and management style. While Rumsfeld has given countless news conferences, CNN is promoting this as a rare one-on-one interview.

¢ For some time now, Showtime has courted controversy – with decidedly mixed results. But the new series “Dexter” (9 p.m. Sunday, Showtime) is a disturbing and controversial drama well worth watching.

Michael C. Hall (“Six Feet Under”) stars in the title role. He’s a forensics expert with the Miami Police Department. His specialty is blood-splatter patterns. He’s the stepson of a celebrated officer and the stepbrother of Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), a struggling officer.

Oh, and Dexter has a secret. He’s a serial killer.

¢ Filled with gorgeous images, “Discovery Atlas” (8 p.m. Sunday, Discovery) offers hourlong profiles of the world’s countries and cultures. “Atlas” kicks off with “China Revealed,” contrasting that nation’s energetic march toward modernization and economic supremacy with its ancient traditions. Future installments will cover Italy (Oct. 8), Brazil (Oct. 15) and Australia (Oct. 22).
