Air Force Lt. Clifton Cushman, former Kansas University and Olympic track star, was reported missing in action in Vietnam where he was serving as a fighter pilot. He was 28. His wife, Carolyn, was living in Omaha. The 1966 Kansas Relays had been dedicated to Lt. Cushman, who was here at the time, just before leaving for Vietnam duty. Cushman with his noted “I Dare You” letter to youth had become famous far beyond athletics and military ranks.
