Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 29, 1906: “Three more local families have been put in diphtheria quarantine today, five cases in one family. This makes a total of 46 cases, most of which are still in quarantine. There have been four deaths, but early in the ‘epidemic’ rather than recently. The new cases all seem to be of the mild form, public health sources say. The anti-toxin treatment is being given to many. : The Kansas Normal and KU football game here has been called off by the Normals, afraid to come here due to the diphtheria problem. : The local telephone company is being criticized for allowing some to have free phone service, such as some university professors. Others have been allowed half rates. Officials are investigating to see if any laws have been broken. : Because of so many new naturalizations here for citizenship, some are considering establishing a Native Sons and Daughters group to involve those who were actually born here rather than coming from outside.”
