Baldwin ready for red-hot Louisburg

Baldwin High’s football game against Louisburg tonight could be the Bulldogs’ make-or-break game of the year.

They are coming off two straight victories – after starting the season 0-2 – and are facing an undefeated Wildcats squad who wins, on average, by 43 points.

“They are a very good team that is right now undefeated in big-class games,” Baldwin coach Mike Berg said. “I’m very impressed with their team, and they’ve been doing a lot of things correctly. They’ve beaten two undefeated teams in the last two weeks – pretty convincingly.”

Though Baldwin’s last two opponents haven’t been at the same high level that Louisburg has faced, Berg still says that the 35-0 victory over Prairie View and the 34-21 win last week at Ottawa came at the right time.

“After the Paola loss, I told the team I wanted us to get better each and every day,” Berg said. “Every day get better and see where that takes us. I feel like we’ve been able to do that since the Prairie View game. We’re still making mistakes, but their working on them – getting them all ironed out.

“It was a big win for us last week, because we built momentum, especially in the second half. When we got off the bus we weren’t ready to play. I’m just proud of the character that the team showed after getting down early – especially on the road.”

The key to their resurgent play has been the improvement of the running game, including the play of Sam Beecher, who has four rushing touchdowns in the last two games.

If the ground game begins to sputter, Berg said he was confident in quarterback Blake Wieden to be able to air it out.

“He’s been throwing well lately,” Berg said, “and we’re going to have to use Blake because we have to be balanced.”
