Enrollment experts at Kansas University who had been predicting declining enrollments in recent years said their forecasts were beginning to hit home. KU’s official headcount for the 20th day of fall-semester classes was down 28 students from the fall of 1980. It marked the first time KU had experienced an enrollment decline since 1977. The 20th-day headcount stood at 22,105, compared to 22,133 the previous fall. Some officials, however, said the decline was so slight it was impossible to predict a steady dropoff.
