Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 28, 1906: “It appears some 14,000 American troops are readied to go to Cuba to keep order while new elections are held. Some Marines already have been battling rebels. Secretary Taft is there to supervise. : Some have criticized the World for keeping people in touch with the diphtheria problem here but we feel the public needs to be informed when there are 39 cases and four deaths, with 31 still in quarantine. This is public service, not ‘sensationalism’ as some have charged. : Lawrence is 52 years old and the local post of the G.A.R. will lead the celebrations. The first cabin here stood on lots now occupied by the Pierson Mill offices and that will be a focal point of the events. : With United States intervention near, the grave question will be the attitude of the Cubans toward the Americans. Much will depend on whether the campaign to set up good government is short or long. “
