KSU’s Baldwin out for season

Defensive back injured in Louisville loss

? When Kansas State opens Big 12 Conference play on the road Saturday against the pass-happy offense of Baylor, the Wildcats will be without starting defensive back Bryan Baldwin.

The junior suffered a season-ending injury during last Saturday’s 24-6 loss to No. 8 Louisville. Coach Ron Prince on Tuesday declined to disclose the nature of the injury, saying only that Baldwin will be out for the season.

Byron Garvin, who started against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 9, will once again move into the starting role.

Garvin, who had a team-high seven tackles and an interception in a 23-7 win over Marshall, leads all defensive backs with 19 tackles. He started the first seven games last season before former coach Bill Snyder suspended him for the remainder of the year after a failed drug test.

“He’s had a really good start to the season,” Prince said of Baldwin. “He’s been a big part of how we play on defense and his leadership in the secondary and developing a number of younger players with his leadership. He will continue to do that, but we’ll just lose his services on the field.”

On the same day Prince announced the loss of one of Kansas State’s defensive leaders, he said the offense will be getting back its top receiving target.

Tight end Rashaad Norwood will be available for the Baylor game, after serving a one-game suspension following his arrest Sept. 17 on charges of disorderly conduct and obstruction of the legal process.

The 6-foot-3, 229-pound tight end led the team with 13 catches for 143 yards before being suspended for last week’s game against Louisville.
