Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 26, 1906: “Lawrence seems to be doing its best to put on its Sunday Best for the Old Home Week next week. Most everyone is sprucing up for the occasion. It is a great example of local cooperation for the benefit of all. : The naturalization process continues here and so far more than 200 have taken out papers and taken oaths to join the ranks of fellow Americans. The new law requires that those who may have avoided making the final steps do so, even if they have been living and voting here for years. : Officials declared today that any danger of a further diphtheria ‘epidemic’ has passed and that it appears the list of victims is standing at 36. Four deaths, however, have resulted from the disease. Many have taken vaccines and many have taken special sanitation pains to stamp out the threat. So far, no university students seem to have been affected.”
