It may have been the earthquake game of the Big 12 Conference season last year – loud and powerful, with aftershocks lasting for days.

Kansas University’s football team walloped Nebraska, 40-15, at Memorial Stadium in 2005, dominating the Huskers in every way imaginable.

Yet a change of scenery and the normal developments in personnel have made this year’s showdown much different – and both coaches recognize as much.

“I’m focused on this year. I can’t even recall last year,” Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said. “Every year is different, the challenges are different, the teams are different.”

The effects of that game, though, still stick today. Kansas needed the victory to have a chance at the postseason, and it eventually played in and won the Fort Worth Bowl last December.

Nebraska, meanwhile, bounced back nicely and won its remaining three games of 2005 against Kansas State, Colorado and Michigan. The Huskers are 3-1 this year, losing only at Southern California.

But the KU-NU contest broke a 36-game winning streak by Nebraska over Kansas, the last long streak the Huskers owned over a conference foe. And the fashion in which the streak crumbled assured it of sticking in the minds of everyone who witnessed it.

Kansas and Nebraska players are still asked about last year’s game. On Monday, the coaches were peppered with questions about it, too, but neither saw last year’s showdown having any significance toward Saturday’s game.

“It was good that we did that,” KU coach Mark Mangino said, “but it’s history. We have to move on.”

Kerry Meier, who was unavailable against South Florida because of injury, may be ready in time for the trip to Lincoln. But Adam Barmann’s solid performance against USF threw a wrench in things, and Mangino didn’t lean one way or the other when asked about it Monday.

“We’re not sure,” Mangino said. “We’re day to day on that situation. Meier is improving and feeling a lot better, but we’re just not sure how we’re going to handle that.”

Lucky honored: Nebraska running back Marlon Lucky was named Big 12 offensive player of the week for his performance against Troy.

Lucky, a sophomore out of North Hollywood, Calif., rushed the ball 10 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns against the Trojans. Lucky and Kenny Wilson both rushed for 100 yards against Troy, and Zac Taylor complemented the ground game with 268 yards passing.
