Washburn steamrolls Fort Hays St.

? Jordan Brill threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns, and Washburn allowed only 163 yards of total offense in a 37-7 victory over Fort Hays State on Saturday night.

Washburn (3-1, 2-0 MIAA) opened the game with Conner Sabel’s 25-yard field goal late in the first quarter. But less than two minutes later, the Ichabods scored again when Brill found Jake Lebahn on a 40-yard touchdown toss.

Brandon Walker made it 21-0 early in the second quarter on a 14-yard TD run before Fort Hays State scored its only touchdown, a one-yard TD run by Jordan Hickel.

Brill threw two more touchdown passes in the second half and Ra’Shawn Mosely scored on a five-yard run for the final margin.

Drew Dallas was only 4-of-20 for 49 yards for Fort Hays State (0-4,0-2). Hickel finished with 42 yards on 19 carries.

Emporia State 35, SW Baptist 31

Bolivar, Mo. – Jermaine Barnett caught two touchdown passes, including the game-winner with less than two minutes to go, for the Hornets.

El Ray Henry rushed for a career-high 138 yards and three touchdowns for Emporia State (3-1, 2-0 MIAA), which led 14-7 at halftime but had to come from behind after Southwest Baptist (0-4, 0-2) took a 24-21 lead late in the third quarter.

Quarterbacks Ben Purkeypile and Justin Whitworth combined to go 11-of-15 for 177 yards and two touchdowns, the first a nine-yard TD pass from Purkeypile to Barnett that allowed ESU to regain the lead 28-24 with 5:56 left in the game.

Robert Clardy, who threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns, answered for Southwest Baptist with a 17-yard TD pass to Nick Smart with just under three minutes left.

But Purkeypile’s TD pass to Barnett, which capped a three-play, 78 yard drive that took just over a minute, proved to be the game-winner.

The teams combined for nearly 900 yards of total offense.
