Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 22, 1906: “The YMCA continues to struggle in its bid for a $3,000 sustaining membership fund and has only $1,900 with the deadline just a day away. The drive started well but soon became a struggle. : The first brush between American Marines and Cuban rebels occurred today near a plantation. The Marines fired on the group and they fled. No casualties were reported. : Three Lawrence banks now have more than $175,000 in circulation because of their assets and it is a good advertisement for the prosperity of Lawrence. They might well have $300,000 if they turned loose all their assets. The banks are Lawrence National, Merchants National and Watkins National, with heads the list with $100,000 in circulation. : Pickers in the Wellhouse Orchard are gathering from 600 to 700 bushels of apples per day. When done, the pickers here will be transferred to the Missouri Valley Orchard Co. The crop appears to be excellent. : The secretary of the firemen’s association due here for a convention during Old Home Week say they have many programs to enliven the scene.”
