Olathe ? The Free State High volleyball team faced off against two defending state champions Thursday, finishing 1-2 in a quad meet at Olathe South.

The Firebirds lost to last year’s Class 6A champ, Olathe South, 25-19, 25-21, and fell to the defending 5A champ, Blue Valley West, 19-25, 25-15, 25-17.

“We didn’t play good volleyball,” Free State coach Nancy Hopkins said. “We did play a lot of good teams and only lost by six points to Olathe South.”

Free State (9-4) topped Shawnee Mission West, 25-20, 21-25, 25-16 for its lone victory.
