Winslow receives stern message

Cleveland TE clams up after complaining about offense

Kellen Winslow walked into the locker room, snaked through some TV cameras and kicked off his sneakers. Snatching a pair of headphones from a shelf, he left moments later listening to loud music.

No interviews, thank you. Winslow was quiet Wednesday, a welcomed calm for the struggling Browns.

At least Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel fixed one thing.

Crennel said he met with Winslow, who told him “he thought he made a mistake” for going to the media on Monday to publicly criticize Cleveland’s coaches for not playing him during key third-down situations and for being too conservative.

“Some of the coaches might be holding us back a little bit,” the tempestuous tight end said. “… We’re losing, and I’m not on the field. I just don’t get it.”

Not surprisingly, the critique didn’t sit well with Crennel.

“I’m the head coach, and I’m the guy who calls the shots,” Crennel said. “If he has displeasure with the shots that are being called, he should address them to me first. I’m calling the shots.”

Spikes back for Bills

Linebacker Takeo Spikes returned to practice and expects to play in Buffalo’s home opener against the Jets this weekend.

Coach Dick Jauron cautioned that Spikes, nursing a pulled right hamstring, is progressing, but he did not take part in full team drills and is still listed as questionable.

Spikes missed Buffalo’s 16-6 victory at Miami last weekend and has been out since getting hurt in the first quarter of a 19-17 season-opening loss at New England on Sept. 10.

Tinoisamoa optimistic

Rams linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa sounds a lot more confident than his coach about his chances of playing with a dislocated elbow.

Tinoisamoa was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at Arizona, although after practicing he said there was no doubt he would play.

The outlook on offensive tackle Orlando Pace, who sustained a concussion in last week’s loss at San Francisco, was more pessimistic. The seven-time Pro Bowl tackle was doubtful and is scheduled for a medical evaluation today.

Moss again on mend

Giants second-round draft pick Sinorice Moss reinjured the quadriceps muscle that sidelined him for most of training camp.

The receiver from Miami, who had one catch in his first game last week, aggravated the injury during practice. He is questionable for Sunday’s game in Seattle.

Whitticker back in action

Guard Will Whitticker was signed by the Dolphins, who’ve had four right guards sidelined by injury already this season. Whitticker started 14 games last season as a rookie with Green Bay, which cut him during this year’s training camp.

The Dolphins needed to make a move because Bennie Anderson is being placed on injured reserve. Anderson had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn left triceps and is done for the season.
