Commissioners OK Lecompton bridge letter

September 21, 2006

A detailed letter outlining why they think the Lecompton bridge should be closed next year when it undergoes major repairs was approved Wednesday night by the Douglas County Commission.

The letter will be sent to the Jefferson County Commission, which opposes closing the bridge during the repair process.

Douglas County commissioners said they are willing to pay for the entire bridge repair process if Jefferson County decides not to participate in the funding, which could cost more than $3.2 million.

All three Douglas County commissioners signed the letter: Bob Johnson, Charles Jones and Jere McElhaney.

Earlier this year McElhaney voted not to close the bridge. But McElhaney said he would stand with Johnson and Jones now that the decision has been made.

Jefferson Co. shouldn't have to pay as much. only 11 % of that bridge is in their county. But I am sure that you be glad to know that if you live in Dg. Co. you'll be paying extra to get the kids from Lecompton (DG. CO.) back and forth to school. Gee I wanta move back to DG. Co. Jefferson Co. is gonna have to pay too, just in a different way. We all lost, it was a no win situation. I hope everyone feels happy about children on buses for more than 2 or 3 hrs a day, especially during bad weather. or having to drive an hour or more to pick them up if they fall ill or have sporting events. Remember, Lecompton, is DG CO. So they have to pay 3 folds..

Unfortunatly Jefferson Co. will end up paying anyway. The money they don't have to pay towards the bridge will have to go towards the extra cost to transport the students, plus loosing some students to Douglas Co.

Closing the bridge only cost the tax payers of Northwest Douglas Co. Jeff Co doesn't need to use the bridge Perry schools are on Jeff Co side of the river. Lecompton Kids have to go to the Perry schools. Boycott Douglas Co. bussiness until the bridge is open.
