The Lawrence Hallmark Cards plant had reached the stage where it could turn out three million greeting cards a day. The employment figure was fast approaching 1,000. The plant had opened in 1958.

Takeru Higuchi, currently at the University of Wisconsin and a man known as “the father of pharmaceutical chemistry,” was to join the Kansas University faculty in 1967 as a Regents distinguished professor.
