Baker ekes out close one
'Cats used to thrillers
LIBERTY, MO. ? If it’s a close call, you can bet Baker University’s football team was involved.
Saturday’s 27-24 overtime victory over William Jewell was the Wildcats’ third game decided by four points or less.
Baker opened the season with a 17-13 victory over Benedictine, then bowed at home to Graceland, 21-17, before stunning the Cardinals on Ryan Smith’s 26-yard field goal in the first extra period Saturday. Smith also booted a 46-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Baker’s punt team also sparkled, recovering two blocked kicks in the end zone – one by Kyle Burnett, a freshman linebacker, and the other by Eric Allen, a sophomore defensive back.
Baker’s lone offensive TD was a three-yard pass from quarterback Mack Brown to wide receiver James Hensley.
Next for Baker will be Evangel at 6 p.m. Saturday at Liston Stadium in Baldwin.
