Home cookin’ here for Haskell

If the home-field advantage means anything, Haskell Indian Nations University’s football team would seem to have an edge over the next five weeks.

The Fightin’ Indians will play four of their five games at Haskell Stadium, starting with tonight’s clash with the University of St. Mary. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

Haskell (0-2) is coming off a 21-19 loss to South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, S.D. In that game, sophomore wide receiver Hunter Smith accounted for more than half of Haskell’s 390 offensive yards when he caught 12 passes for 200 yards.

St. Mary, located in Leavenworth, opened last week with a 26-22 win over Ottawa University. The Spires toppled Haskell, 10-0, last season on their home field at Lansing High.

After the win over Ottawa, St. Mary defensive back Ray Garcia was named NAIA defensive player of the week. Garcia, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior, intercepted three passes, blocked a field goal and returned a kickoff for a touchdown against the Braves.
