Topeka Democrat Nancy Boyda today released an internal campaign poll that shows she is leading incumbent Republican Jim Ryun in the race to represent the 2nd congressional district, which includes west Lawrence.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the race is on," Boyda said at a news conference. "David is beating Goliath. Grassroots democracy is beating big money."
At the conclusion of the news conference, a Ryun campaign official handed out a statement criticizing Boyda.
"This is a desperate attempt to revive a fading campaign," said Ryun's spokesman Jeffrey Black.
The poll showed 42.5 percent favored Boyda; 41.2 percent favored Ryun and 16.2 percent were undecided. The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 4.6 percent.
The poll was conducted Monday and surveyed 456 likely voters that were randomly selected from a voter registration file list from the 2nd congressional district. Poll officials said the sample represented the political makeup of the district.
Boyda said the only reason she was revealing the data was that on Thursday a front page story in the Kansas City Star downplayed her chances against Ryun because she was receiving little attention from the national Democratic Party in Washington, D.C.
Boyda said it has always been her strategy to run independent of the national party.
"When I go to Congress, I want to represent the people of Kansas, not the Washington Beltway crowd," she said.
But Ryun's spokesman Black dismissed Boyda's poll claims.
"If any legitimate, scientific polling firm found these results, the national Democrats would not have written off this race as reported by the Kansas City Star on Sept. 14," he said.
State Sen. Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka, said the polling company Infomark Research has a reputation for accuracy, and cited several instances of how it predicted winners in close races.
"This is a winnable race for Nancy Boyda," Hensley said.

Never, EVER put any stock in an “internal campaign poll.” It appears the Boyda campaign needed to do something - anything - to offset the potentially fatal story that ran on yesterday's front page of the KC Star.

for all of you who keep saying “if it were true, DC Dems would be everywhere on this race…”
why in the world….WHY…would anyone have commissioned a poll in this race at the national level? the woman lost by 15 points last time…as far as they are concerned, that is plenty.
the MINUTE they see this data, they are going to explode…a woman who lost by 15 points is even…what other races are they discounting?
so, geez, give the national party a break….this will shock them as much as it did use…cuz they sure has hell haven't polled here

Be nice if it was all true—she is ahead, and winning by herself, can tell the DNC to go to hell.
That's the kind of candidate we need, beholden to her constituents, not the Powers That Be. Especially with Ryun doing one of the best damn parrot impressions our fair state has ever seen. He's a classic empty suit, mouthing all the right rhetoric, backing it up with nothing. And people have been eating it up. Had enough?
That said, we'll see how well Boyda really does. She's got my vote (hell, a sofa would over our Honorable Rep.), but that doesn't mean that the vast unwashed will be any more eager to vote against someone who says all the right things, regardless of his actual track (hah!) record.

Boyda is the public face the radical left in Kansas. The lefties in Lawrence that support her are not sufficient to override the rest of the district.

I have a feeling Ryan has spent almost nothing of his “war chest” yet. Let's face it, Boyda is far left and Boyda is far right. But it does help her a popular dem. is running for governor and even moderates are fleeing any party with Bush in it.
So I give her a chance to win, but Ryan has to be the favorite.

Internal polls are always suspect, but the race is going to be close. I will give the edge to Ryun just because he is an incumbent and has lots of money and is not afraid to exploit fear and negative attack ads.
Mark my words, in Ryun ad spots, Boyda will be accused of being a radical leftist who wants to confiscate your money through high taxes and who is an atheist and a friend to terrorists. This is all the right-wing liberals in the GOP have anymore. They have bungled the governance of this country so badly that they have no positive record on which to run.
Exploitation of greed and fear works, and the GOP politicos are masters of it.

if Ryun is still winning and Boyda's polling is wrong then why is Ryun appealing to moderates with a “pro-environment” commercial (while he's gassing up his SUV btw) - if he was winning he wouldn't need to do this or heck run commercials at all.

Calling Boyda the “radical left” is ridiculous. She is a moderate and even has a little right-wing to her, and she is definitely a conservative of the Bob Dole/Nancy Kassebaum type. She would have been a republican 15 years ago.
The GOP has been purging such moderates from their ranks as of late, so they have no choice but to call them “radical leftists” because they want to win.

Boyda claims that allowing an expansion of I-35 would be “blowing a hole in the border”
Yet she hooks her wagon to Sebelius' star; Sebelius, who, until overridden by the Bush administration, proposed giving undocumented aliens Kansas drivers licenses, and challenging Federal regulations, has implemented allowing people who are in our state illegally to receive in-state tuition benefits.
Boyda, how do you reconcile these diametricaloly opposed positions?
Boyda is throwing anything she can at the wall to see if it sticks, hoping she will find a message that ordinary Kansans can relate to.
Boyda is a radical left-wing liberal, a Code Pink, a Coalition for Peace and Justince, a Green Peace liberal. No matter how she tries, she will not convince average Kansans that she has their interests at heart.

Actually, she WAS a Republican 15 years ago. Just like so many other intelligent and reasonable people who are now running for office in Kansas, she switched parties. And yes, she is very moderate.

Is this the same Nancy Boyda who was not just a war protester in 2003 but a war protest organizer?
Is this the same Nancy Boyda featured on ABC's World News Tonight boarding the protest bus to D.C. that SHE organized?
Is this same Nancy Boyda who marched with A.N.S.W.E.R., the uber, ultra ridiculously far left group demanding that we withdraw all U.S. troops from global peacekeeping missions in places such as, gasp, Haiti?
Yes, unfortunately, it's the same Nancy Boyda.

HGA, pot calling the kettle black, eh?
Boyda is nowhere near a moderate, unless we allow you to define moderate as one who adheres to the uber-liberal ideology. I pointed out specific liberal stances. Where are your specifically “moderate” quotes?
And I am not “defending” Morris; I am simply pointing out that she is doing what all other politicians do, including the Lawrence City Commission. When you condemn the Fab 5 for their extravagant vacation plans, then I will join in condemning Morris for hers.

For Cut and Run in Iraq
For Cutting Defense Budgets
Against Marriage Amendment
Against doing anything to stop illegal immigration, but for amnesty.
Against exploring for more oil
For a universal health care plan
Against tax relief
Liberal enough for you?
And she wasn't a Republican 15 years ago. She registered as a republican in 2000, switching back to Democrat in 2003.

How many of you have served your country? How about it godot, have you served?
Are you able to say that you stepped up to the plate and were willing to die for the good ol` US of A?
Well, I did, and I am now medically retired because of it. If you or any one else who posts here want my injuries, the pain, loss of personal freedoms and bad memories I have, say the word. I'd trade places in a heartbeat, because I'd rather have the ability to run with my daughter, hold my wife in my arms, and be normal again.
Nancy Boyda's husband served in the Marine Corps during Vietnam, the same as I did. The USMC is the original all-volunteer fighting force. The Marines have never accepted draftees, so he did put his life on the line to give you ungrateful malcontents a platform in which to denigrate him and his wife.
I was one of those who protested invading a sovereign nation as well. I learned in Vietnam that invaders are never treated as liberators, as did many peace-loving people from all walks of life.
It is a shame you haven't serve in the military. You should put your mouth to work saying how the war is worth it when your service days are over, because we can respect a person who speaks with personal knowledge. I for one have nothing but pity for a person who beats their chest while bleating like a goat. All for the world to notice how important they are.
