Seahawk volleyball dominates quad

? Even without one of its two big hitters, the Seabury Academy volleyball team was too strong for everyone else Tuesday night during a quadrangular meet at Shawnee Maranatha.

Playing without sophomore outside hitter Melissa Burch – who was sidelined with strep throat – the Seahawks bounced back from an early Game 1 loss to Kansas City Christ Prep to win six straight games, beating Christ Prep, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14; Olathe Christian, 25-19, 25-17; and Maranatha, 25-15, 25-20, to complete a three-match sweep.

“We lost the first game, because it’s a different lineup and it took a little bit of getting used to,” said Seabury coach Craig Friedrichsen, who inserted freshman Kirsten Vogel into Burch’s spot in the rotation. “From then on we played really good volleyball.”

Seabury’s other primary weapon, senior outside hitter Molly Thurman, continued her strong play with 22 kills, nine aces and three solo blocks. Sophomore setter Bria Phipps added seven kills and six aces.

Vogel, making her debut at outside hitter, racked up 12 kills.

“She had roughly 10 minutes to learn she was going to be our outside hitter,” Friedrichsen said. “It was probably good that she didn’t have a lot of time to think about it.”

Seabury (7-3) will return to action Saturday at the Hartford Invitational.
