Old home town – 40 years ago today

Fall semester orientation was under way at Kansas University, and classes were to begin in a week. Among the newcomers was Debbie Bryant, the outgoing Miss America.

Thomas L. Risk, a local Marine entering his 13th month of combat in Vietnam, had been notified that if he did not pay $38.08 to the Internal Revenue Service the IRS would “go get him.” Risk said he would welcome being sought out and forced to come home to pay the bill, at government expense, of course. But he added he already had sent a check and that “the IRS should be happy now.”
