Mulder undergoes shoulder operation

? St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder underwent surgery to repair a partial tear of his rotator cuff Tuesday.

The surgery was done by New York Mets team physician Dr. David Altchek and Cardinals team physician Dr. George Paletta.

The team said Mulder will begin physical therapy and rehabilitation in one or two weeks and, while his prognosis for a recovery was “excellent,” no timetable had been set for his return.

The 29-year-old Mulder was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season on Aug. 31. He missed two months earlier in the season due to rotator cuff damage and impingement in the shoulder, which had caused him to alter his delivery.

Mulder was 6-7 in 17 starts with a 7.14 ERA.

No surgery for Hafner

Cleveland – Travis Hafner finally got some good news Tuesday after having his record-tying season come to a premature end because of a broken right hand.

“It looks like it it will heal fine, and I do not need surgery,” the Cleveland Indians’ designated hitter said.

Hafner was hit by a pitch from Texas’ C.J. Wilson on Sept. 1. Original X-rays were negative, but a second test a week later in Chicago revealed a hairline fracture. Hafner was re-examined by hand specialist Dr. Tom Graham in Baltimore on Monday.

Hafner was one of the few bright spots of consistency throughout Cleveland’s disappointing season. He tied Don Mattingly’s all-time record of six grand slams in a season and batted .308 with career highs of 42 homers and 117 RBI.
