Population estimate challenges continue

Douglas County on Monday joined the city of Lawrence in challenging local population estimates made by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The challenges are being made because local officials believe the county and city populations are considerably higher than the Census estimates issued Jan. 1.

The census estimate lists the county’s population at 102,914, while the city-county planning department estimates it at 113,079. The census estimate for Lawrence is 81,816, while the local estimate is at 89,643.

If records show the city and county have lost population or aren’t growing, that could affect federal and state funding to local government entities and projects. Some funding is based on population totals.
