Front doors unlocked at parents’ request

On orders from Supt. Randy Weseman, the front door was back in business Monday morning at New York School, 936 N.Y.

In response to parents’ complaints, Weseman put out a memo during the weekend saying that starting Monday, students would again be able to use the front door at the beginning of the school day instead of having to enter through one of two rear doors.

Interim principal Mike Browning had said he didn’t have enough staff members to monitor the front door in the mornings and that it was necessary to lock it for security reasons.

But it caused an outcry from parents who said they felt shut out of the school. Several parents had planned to speak about the subject at Monday’s school board meeting.

Weseman wrote that a security worker now would be posted at the front door starting at 7 a.m.

Stefanie Olson, one of the parents upset about the locked door, said that being able to use it again on Monday morning “really made the school feel like a community school again.”
