Power restored to 11,000 Lawrence customers

Routing switch failed at Westar substation

11,000 Lawrence residents lost power this afternoon when a routing switch failed at the Westar-controlled substation near 15th Street and Kasold Drive.

Much of the Kansas University campus lost power as well, stalling elevators and setting off fire alarms at many campus buildings.

According to Westar officials, much of west-central Lawrence lost power around 3:50 p.m. The power outages affected all homes and businesses between Peterson Street and Clinton Parkway on the north and south, and Iowa Street and Kasold Drive on the east and west.

Crews restored power by 4:20 p.m. by re-routing power to lines with extra electrical space, Westar officials said.

Westar said it would repair failed equipment at the station Thursday.
