From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 11, 1906: “Lee Harris, an employee of the Lawrence Electric Light Co., met with a severe accident last evening. A heavy pulley fell upon his left leg causing a severe fracture. : It is well for us to remember the value of the electric company and its people who serve us so well. When it’s warm weather you can read the paper out on your porch by an electric light and when it’s cold and icy, the same light will pilot you safely up or down the slippery steps. So many, many benefits from the light company. : Work on the Panama Canal is reported progressing well but the death rate among the workers is disturbing. : More public transportation is developing and the day is fast coming when we will all have to hustle up nickels for ‘car fare.'”
