Desiree Stephenson, age 52, Lawrence

I’m originally from NYC and moved to Lawrence in May 2000. I was at working at Sprint PCS when I heard about the first plane crashing into one of the towers. I thought it was out of a movie when I first rushed to the lunchroom and saw it live on CNN. Then, I just couldn’t believe that a second plane crashed into the towers. I knew at that point that this was terrorism. Trying to get through to my friends on the phone was impossible as all the lines were busy.

For the next three weeks, I was glued to the TV and was in constant contact with my longtime friends getting their feedback, which was better than what was offered on the news.

I realized that I hadn’t listened to music for three weeks as I was glued to CNN. I desperately wanted to go back home, so I flew back toward the end of October. Before landing at LaGuardia, our plane flew south of Manhattan and I could still see the smoke rising from ground zero. What an awful sight.

A friend from Lawrence came to visit me in NYC while still residing there in 1999, and I took her up to the towers’ observation deck and outside on the roof where the cable antenna stood. We still have pictures of that day.

God bless America and all the families and friends of the victims of 9/11.
