Fightin’ Indians can’t finish comeback

? Quarterback Jason Beilstein threw three touchdown passes, and South Dakota Mines survived a furious comeback to edge Haskell Indian Nations University, 21-19, in NAIA football Saturday.

The Hardrockers forged a 21-6 lead midway through the fourth quarter on Beilstein’s third TD pass, but the Fightin’ Indians scored less than a minute later on quarterback Marlon Dick’s one-yard plunge to cut the deficit to 21-13.

Then with 2:01 remaining, Dick connected with Hunter Smith on a three-yard scoring pass to cut Mines’ lead to 21-19. However, moments later, Dick’s two-point conversion pass to Smith fell incomplete.

Dick competed 17 of 33 passes for 220 yards, but threw three interceptions. Smith finished with 12 receptions for 200 yards. Bubba Wills led the Indians in rushing with 126 yards on 23 carries.

HINU (0-2) will entertain St. Mary at 7 p.m. Saturday.
