Tom Sheely served as camp director Aug. 4-12 at Rotary Camp, a camp for Boy Scouts with severe handicaps, in Lake Jacoma, Mo.

Jack Berkowitz, Mason McCurdy, Will Armstrong, Zack Owen and Ted Olson served on the staff.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 55, chartered to Westside Presbyterian Church, attended summer camp July 10-19 at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation near Osceola, Mo.

Scouts who attended included: Jamie Braden, Andrew Carttar, Kevin Cottrell, Phoenix DeLaConcepcion, Austin Down, Ian Gent, Kameron Gibler, Kiefer Gibler, Griffin Kimmel, Josh Gore, Tyler Hanson, Ludwig Johanning, Ulrich Johanning, David Lawrence, Mitch McCune, Chris Muetz, Kjell Mullenix, Steve Norris, Alan O’Neal, Colin O’Neal, Wyatt Patterson, Jacob Pfeifer, Isaac Remboldt, Isaac Rinke, Johnathan Roberts, Matt Simmons, Joseph Vannicola, Grady Walker, J.D. Williams, Spencer Wilson and Jeremy Woodhead. Tim Barta, of Troop 52, and James Simmons, of Troop 65, also attended.

Annelee Marsh was camp scoutmaster and Scott Braden was assistant scoutmaster. Adult leaders who attended were: Andrew Avila, Cammie Braden, Keith Cowert, John Pfeifer, Stephen Roberts, Deb Vannicola and Scott Woodhead.

The boys earned 75 merit badges. The following scouts advanced: Jeremy Woodhead, First Class; Tyler Hansen, Tenderfoot; Ulrich Johanning, Star; and Ludwig Johanning, Star.

At the first Fun Night, the scouts won first place in the egg drop contest and second place in the paper airplane contest. Wyatt Patterson was the rock-paper-scissors champ at Camp Sawmill. Troop 55 won the basketball tournament.

Scott Braden, John Pfeifer and Grady Walker hiked the Osage trail. Cammie Braden and David Simmons earned B.S.A. Lifeguard certification, and Grady Walker was recertified as B.S.A. Lifeguard.

David Lawrence, Matt Simmons and James Simmons were recognized as Foxman by the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Kevin Cottrell, Josh Gore, Kameron Gibler, Joseph Vannicola and Jacob Christilles, Tim Barta and Justin Deaver were elevated to Warrior. Grady Walker earned his green paint and is now a Tom Tom beater. Andrew Avila earned his blue paint and is now a Runner. Drew Braden advanced to Firebuilder and to TomTom Beater. Bryce Barringer advanced to Keeper of the Sacred Bundle.

Stephen Roberts was inducted into the tribe as Honorary Warrior and Cammie Braden as an Honored Woman.

The Conservation Project involved realigning the rocks along the pathways within the campsite and to lash the wooden fencing with natural twine.

The troop received the National Camping Award, in recognition of its yearlong camping program, and the Conservation Award while at Bartle.

Boy Scouts and leaders from Troop 59, chartered to First Presbyterian Church, attended fall induction ceremonies for the Order of the Arrow, a national Boy Scout honor camping organization, at the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation in Bonner Springs.

New Ordeal members include: Connor Caldwell, Patrick Fay, Jack Hearnen, Alex Kong, Trevor Leslie, Ryan Marienau and Adam Wangler, as well as adults Eric Caldwell and Doug Fay.

Scouts elevated to Brotherhood membership included Henry Chapman, Jonathan Gabler, Derek Kappelman, John Wagner and Derrick Weishaar as well as adult leaders Paul Gabler, Brenda Kappelman, Clay Kappelman and Laurie Marienau. Brenda Kappelman served as camp Scoutmaster.

Venturing Crew 2052, chartered to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church of Lawrence, attended Anchor’s Aweigh July 17-21 at Quivera Scout Ranch near Wichita.

The girls learned and/or acquired new skills in canoeing, kayaking, small motor boating, 2-man sailing, and large team schooner sailing. They backpacked and camped in various spots on the lake. While there, Jo Anna Male, Alexis Tommer, Ameila Wilson, Carol Fittell, and Camille Fittell earned their Sea Scout Bronze award.

The crew participated in “Bartle Blast,” a summer camp, Aug. 9-14 at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. They also spent a day canoeing. They participated in a luau, limbo contest, dances, treasure hunt and Pirate costume party. Other activities included: rifles, scuba diving, biking, archery, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, bead work, looms, various games, and the Iron Chef Contest. The crew placed second in the Iron Chef Contest and third in the treasure hunt.

The Crew plan to visit Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron, N.M., in 2007, and will be participating in various training and hiking events. Future events include canoeing on the Tahlequah River in Oklahoma, helping with Webelos Weekend, District Camporee, Maple Leaf Festival, helping with the Halloween Train in Baldwin, IBEX Climbing Lock-in in November, and a winter high adventure to OKPIK at Northern Tier High Adventure Camp in December.

The crew focuses mainly on high adventure activities, and meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of every month.

The next meeting will be Thursday at St. Margaret’s Church. Girls in grades sixth through eighth are invited to join.
