For the first time since the late 1950s, Kansas University was to have a coeducational dormitory, McCollum Hall. The facility was to hold 976 men and women students.

On the first day of fall semester classes here, the enrollment figure for Lawrence School District 497 was 7,729: 4,445 elementary, 1,674 junior high and 1,600 senior high pupils. That represented an increase of about 500 youngsters from the final figure for the previous fall.
