Foxworthy’s ‘Big Night’ hit-and-miss

The Kings of Comedy and the Blue Collar Comedy team have long existed in parallel dimensions, carving out their respective niche of the nightclub and TV audiences. Both groups had their stint on the departing WB network. Steve Harvey, Jamie Foxx and Cedric the Entertainer were part of the network’s early years, while the Blue Collar troupe appeared during the WB’s final seasons.

Now, like Cedric the Entertainer, “Blue Collar” star Jeff Foxworthy takes a stab at the variety show with “Foxworthy’s Big Night Out” (7:30 p.m., CMT).

Also like Cedric, Foxworthy has his own stable of sexy dancers (“The Homewreckers”) to accompany the songs, skits and standup. While Cedric’s musical efforts echoed Barry White, Foxworthy seems determined to fill the entertainment void created by the departure of “Hee Haw.”

Foxworthy’s standup material is more gentle than “Blue.” He sets the tone during his first monologue when he begins almost every joke with the phrase, “My wife :” His mother is also in the audience.

The skits are much looser, occasionally bawdier and are, for the most part, mercifully brief.

The veteran newsman had an assuring avuncular authority blessedly free of celebrity overtones. And he increased the audience for the newscast.
