County commissioner running unopposed

Charles Jones, 54, seeks his third term as Douglas County commissioner in the First District.

The unopposed Democrat said key issues for him in a new term would be implementing new rural development and subdivision regulations, and getting something done about the former Farmland fertilizer plant.

Jones and fellow commissioners, Bob Johnson and Jere McElhaney, recently passed new subdivision regulations and forwarded them to the Lawrence City Commission for approval.

Jones also said he hopes the County Commission will have an important voice with the city of Lawrence in hiring a new city-county planning director.

“I think we are at a point now where the issues are so critical and our relationship so important,” he said. “I can sort of see it reframing the relationship between the city and the county over the next few years.”

Jones has lived in Lawrence since 1976. He is director of the Kansas University’s Public Management Center. His district includes much of northern, central and some of East Lawrence.
